Consistent support for GCSEs

This was our third time using Explore Learning, previously for SATs and then for some primary school tutoring. This time it was for GCSE maths tuition. I always appreciate how consistent the quality of the sessions is, whether online or in-centre. They really seem to understand the curriculum well and my son always felt supported. It's why we keep coming back when he needs a bit of extra help.

Helpful for reading comprehension

I enrolled my son in the reading comprehension sessions online after hearing good things. The initial sign-up was straightforward on their website, and we had a free trial first, which was great. The tutors were quite engaging, and he liked the interactive elements. We received feedback after each session, which was useful to track his progress. The only minor point was sometimes booking specific time slots could be a bit tight, but we always managed to find something that worked. Overall, it provided good support for what we needed.

Good for 11 plus prep

We tried out the 11 plus exam preparation for my son. He went to a few sessions. It seemed to help him understand what to expect. The online platform was pretty easy to use and the tutors were generally helpful. Overall, a solid experience, nothing to complain about really.

How long are the sessions normally? My kid has a short attention span.

B Beth 1 month ago
Each session is about an hour, sometimes a little bit more if they're really into something. For younger kids, it can feel a bit shorter with breaks.

They're an hour long. They break it up a bit though, so it's not just sitting still for the whole time. They use computers and different activities.

I'm looking at maths support for GCSEs. Is it better than Kumon? I heard Kumon is really repetitive.

R Raj M. 1 month ago
I'd say it's less repetitive than Kumon, they have a bit more variety in their approach. My son found Kumon a bit boring, but he's ok with Explore Learning.

From what I've seen, Explore Learning uses more tech and different methods, so it might be more engaging if your kid struggles with just worksheets. Kumon is very focused on repetition which works for some, but not all.

If I need to cancel, is it a pain? Like, can I just do it online or do I have to call a million times?

S Sarah Vargas 1 month ago
You have to give a month's notice, but it's not a huge hassle. I just called them up.

It's usually a month's notice. I think you just contact your centre directly to sort it out. No big drama.

Can I use childcare vouchers for this? Like the ones from my job?

D David 1 month ago
Yeah, pretty sure you can. I'm using mine for my daughter's sessions.

Yep, they definitely accept them. I think you just give them the voucher info when you sign up or when they bill you.

Are the tutors actually qualified teachers or just like, university students?

T Tom Romero 1 month ago
They definitely employ qualified teachers, but also have university students who are often studying education. They get a lot of training apparently.

I think it's a mix. They have teaching staff but also uni students who are really good at maths or English. They all seem to know their stuff and are good with kids.
